Parting Instructions

(after photographs by August Sander, 1913)

Before my eyes I see your face
Your wedding veil in white spun lace.

There’s needle, thread, to darn your socks
And don’t forget to wind the clocks.

Before my eyes I see your face
Lit as our children fill this place.

Meat and some veg will make a stew -
It’s really not so hard to do.

Before my eyes I see your face
It’s mild and mellowed lines I trace.

Don’t let our old dog suffer pain,
Please put an end before he’s lame.

Before my eyes – where is your face?
Wrenched from my depths by deaths’ embrace.

On Sundays please make sure you shave,
And don’t go weeping by my grave.
